Black History is Sew Interesting! November 2023
Sewing provides many benefits to children, including enhancing fine motor skills, improving concentration, utilizing both hemispheres of the brain, and improving hand-eye coordination. Sewing and quilting supplies will allow our fourth graders the chance to make a hands-on connection to Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson. This grant provides funding for knot tie quilts, fabric, thread, and sewing supplies, as well as a cart to store the supplies in.
After reading Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt in February, each student in our fourth grade classes will have the opportunity to design and sew their own quilt blocks. The project will culminate in each class creating a collaborative quilt.
