Just a Spoon Full of Sugar Helps Students Create SWEET Songs November 2018
With this grant, students in grades 2-4 will discover the joy of exploring melody and rhythm while working together with classmates to ultimately compose and perform an original song. Students begin by using names of candies to learn fundamental rhythms which serve as building blocks to arrange into original rhythmic patterns. Students then take their patterns to the barred Orff instruments and experiment and compose melodies based on a C pentatonic scale. By combining melodies and layering “complementary rhythms” as accompaniment, each class will create one full, unique “sweet song” to perform. Grant funds purchases several xylophones, a portable speaker, candy and other incentives.
