Children’s Literature: A Bridge Over Troubled Water May 2019

Ms. Nimmer, Harrison High School English teacher, received a grant to fund her project titled “Children’s Literature: Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Students read six children’s books by Kobi Yamada and Peter Reynolds who are renowned for their presentation of complex issues including mindfulness, character, creativity, identity, social responsibility, motivation and integrity. Students each analyzed, discussed and reflected upon the literature while preparing to construct literary analysis papers that capture the depth and intricacy of one book from among the six that spoke the most to them. These books allow teenagers to relearn what they knew and believed as children. Thus, this project will supplement academic curriculum by providing perhaps the most important content of all: a candid look inside their hearts.
