Self Selecting Books Based on a Budget November 2018
Reading is one of the most accessible and affordable arts activities and its benefits are well documented. This grant gives Kindergartners experience in becoming invested in their own reading and consumer experiences. Each student has been given a $20 budget to buy Scholastic books of their choice. The amount of money each book costs is paid by each child through a classroom currency system and tracked using a graph. Through this experience, students will make selections based on their own areas of interest. By tying their book choice to their budget, this gives students real world experience on decision making that is pat of daily life. Students also anticipate the arrival of their books which in turn gives them additional experience in delayed gratification. All of these experiences help to make books more pleasurable and valuable to our students.
